Watkins approves 2011-12 school budget

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen school board approved the 2011-12 budget and agreed to put school consolidation plan to a public vote, at the Monday, April 11, meeting.
The board approved 2011-12 budget is $24,131,699.  District Treasurer Gayle Sedlack said the tax levy increase is 4.5 percent.
The board agreed with the public committee  to pursue consolidation of the school district; students from the middle school would be moved into the 12th Street campus.  Superintendent Tom Phillips said the district will finalize building and financial plans.  He said district residents will get to vote on consolidation in early December of this year.
Watkins started looking at consolidation of the middle school building as a cost savings measure.  The district Incorporated the state mandated five year buildings conditions survey into the consolidation study.  Even if consolidation is voted down, certain repairs and renovations will be required across the district.
