Watkins beats Edison, 73-39

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins boys varsity team faced Thomas A. Edison, Tuesday, Jan. 5, and won, 73-39.
"It was good getting a lot of guys scoring," said Coach John Fazzary.  Watkins had the lead early in the game and kept it.  Fazzary also explained the Edison team was short-handed on players during the game. 
The Senecas' top scorer was Travis Waite with 13 points.  Behind him was Alec Moore, who scored 12 points.  Connor Fitzsimmons, Andrew Malaney, and Clayton Beaumont all scored 10 points each.  The boys basketball team is now 6-2.
The Watkins Glen boys basketball teams plays at Tioga next, Jan. 8.

HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT WIN
In the last few minutes of the game against Newfield, Watkins Glen pulled out a win in the championship holiday tournament, Monday, Dec. 28.
Watkins won, 61-59.  While the Senecas held the lead for the entire game, Newfield quickly closed the point gap in the last quarter.  Watkins' win ended up being dependent on free throw shots.  After Newfield came within two points of the Senecas with two free throws of their own, Watkins' Joshua Paradiso scored three points in free throws, making the score 60-56.
While the Senecas then had a small lead, Newfield managed a three point shot, bring the score to almost tying.  Paradiso made one more free throw with .6 seconds left on the clock to bring the final score to 61-59.
After the game, the MVP was named; Watkins' Stuart Cook.  He also had the most points at Monday's game with 19.  Cook scored the most of his points in the third quarter.  He had five two-point shots, one three pointer, and one free throw.  Malaney had the second highest, with 18 points.  He scored most of those in the second quarter; with two each of two-point shots, three-point shots, and free throws.  Waite had 12 points.
