Watkins beats Odessa twice in one night

WATKINS GLEN—The Senecas' boys and girls basketball teams beat the Indians, Tuesday, Dec. 22, at a home game and at an away game.
The Watkins boys varsity basketball team played Odessa in a home game and won, 65-27.  The Watkins girls basketball team also prevailed at Odessa, 53-48.
In the boys basketball game, Watkins held a clear lead throughout the game.  Watkins' Alec Moore scored 14 points and Travis Waite had 12.  Both Connor Fitzsimmons and Clayton Beaumont scored nine points.  Odessa's Trevor Carey scored eight points, Dan Stephens had seven points, and Phil Smith had six points.
The girls basketball game was a closer match.  Odessa trailed through the whole game, but in the last quarter came closer to winning.  Watkins Coach Michelle Simiele said Odessa came within three points of Watkins' score at the end of the game, but two free throw shots gave Watkins more space.
For Watkins, Taylor Chaffee scored the most with 26 points.  She also had 24 rebounds, two steals, and four assists.  Marissa Pike scored nine points and Shelby Olafson scored eight.  Odessa's Whitney Ayers scored 17 points, Rebecca Ayers had 11 points, and Michelle Melanson 9 points.
"Taylor Chaffee single-handedly beat us and dominated the game. It was as simple as that," said Odessa Coach Greg Gavich.  "It had to be an up-and-down fast-paced game and the first three quarters it was a half-court game, which played right into their hands.  We finally got the game at our pace in the fourth, but we had dug too deep a hole."
"We played a great game defensively," said Simiele.
