Watkins boys, girls claim sectional titles


CHENANGO VALLEY—The Watkins Glen boys and girls varsity cross country teams both won the Section IV Class D championships at Chenango Valley State Park, Thursday, Oct. 31.


With the win, Watkins advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament, Saturday, Nov. 9.


Matt Gill led the boys in first overall (16:31.6), followed by Patrick Hazlitt in fourth (17:32.2). Shawn Rutledge took ninth (18:07.2). Jacob Carocci finished in 13th (18:20.9), while Matthew Woodworth was 15th (18:35.5). Brandon Pike placed 27th (19:24.5) and Jacob Slater was 36th.


For the girls, Taylor Kennard finished sixth (21:29.0). Maggie Bond was 12th (22:14.7), while Julia Reilly (22:24.5) and Maria Chedzoy (23:07.6) followed in 13th and 14th respectively. Corey Flahive was 20th (24:24.3).
