WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen varsity football team lost to Newark Valley, 43-20, during Homecoming, Saturday, Oct. 2. During halftime, the Homecoming king and queen were crowned. This year’s winners are Andrew Conklin and Kendra Shaw. The rest of the Homecoming court are Blossom Arden, Meg Bartow-Cannon, Kelsey Johnson, Shelby Olafson, Ryan Albro, James Compton, Brokton Force, and Travis Waite. "We knew we were going to be playing a tough football team. They're well coached, and have executed all season. Tonight they blocked very well and ran extremely hard,” said Coach Mike Johnston Sr. Travis Waite, Hunter Archangeli, and Derek Steinruck all scored touchdowns for the Senecas. Waite also had 22 carries, for 166 yards. Archangeli had 12 carries, for 67 yards. Steinruck contributed 21 yards over six carries. Watkins had a total of 292 offensive yards: 280 rushing and 12 passing. “Turnovers were the big difference in the outcome of this game,” Johnston said. “I felt like we came ready to play, and early on proved that we could play with them, however our four turnovers caught up with us and took us out of the game." Defensively, Waite had eight tackles for Watkins. Billy Brennan had six tackles. Johnston explained that the team was shorthanded, and everyone had to contribute. He said off season preparation and the strength coach helped the team’s stamina at the end of the game. Watkins plays next at Trumansburg, Oct. 8. "We need to get right back to work for our game next week at Trumansburg,” said Johnston. “They're a strong team, with a good quarterback. We need to keep working on what we do best and continue to get better every day."
