Watkins football falls to Waverly

WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen varsity football team lost a close contest to Waverly 38-28 in their home opener Saturday, Sept. 13. Waverly led 19-6 at halftime, but the Senecas scored 16 points in the third quarter to pull closer.
"It was a great game," Head Coach Lou Condon Jr. said. "Probably the best game I have ever coached. It came down to about six minutes to go, we were down by four. We were going for it on fourth down, we just didn't get it, but we went for a screen pass and just couldn't complete it. It was wide open. They pressured our quarterback and he threw it just out of range. It was a tough loss but I couldn't be more proud of the way our kids played."
Jon Brown led the rushing game with 26 carries for 215 yards, three touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Keith Rekczis had 17 carries for 114 yards, one touchdown and one two-point conversion, while wideout Jordan Rappleye had one reception for 22 yards. Justin Kelly completed two of five attempts for 22 yards, adding four rushes for eight yards.
Jordan Shea had two extra point blocks during the game.
Condon said he was proud of the team, school and everyone who attended the game. He credited the offensive line with "phenomenal" play during the game.
"I think going forward we really opened up some eyes tonight," Condon said. "Waverly is a sectional championship state contender football program and we were right there with them all the way down to four minutes to go in the game."
