WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen girls varsity soccer team beat Spencer-VanEtten, 6-1, in the first home game of the season, Friday, Sept. 3. By halftime, Spencer had scored its one and only goal. Watkins’ Chelsea Lehman scored the first goal, at 17:19. Before halftime was up, Angela Keough also scored at 6:56. After halftime, Keough scored again at 22:50, by headbutting the ball into the other team’s goal. Brittany Miller scored for the Senecas at 16:39, Hannah Pastrick at 8:36, and Chrissy Ector at 4:01. Keough also had two assists and Cassie Wait had one. Coach Travis Durfee said Watkins attempted a total of 24 shots, while Spencer only had five. He called this game, “a culmination of playing off season since last year.” Durfee explained the girls practiced from the winter through the summer. “They’re at such a better place,” he said, adding when the girls soccer team played Spencer-VanEtten last time, Watkins lost. The game was followed by a celebration of the fall sports teams. Members from the boys and girls soccer teams, cross country, football, volleyball, and cheerleading teams paraded around the track with banners. Parents and fans were encouraged to come, showing off Seneca spirit.
