Watkins girls fall in championship game

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team lost to Corning, 48-38, in the championship game of the holiday tournament, Thursday, Dec. 30.
"The kids played a hard game and Corning is a good team," said Coach Michelle Simiele.  "It's a good test for us."
This was Watkins' first loss of the season, making the record 7-1.  Taylor Chaffee led the team with 15 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks, and four steals.  Marissa Pike was next with eight points.  Haley Tuttle also had seven points and five rebounds.
Brittany Popovich followed with four points.  Chelsea Lehman and Stephanie Clawson each had two points.
To get to the championship game, Watkins beat Newfield the day before, 59-47.  Pike led scoring with 21 points, four steals, and six assists.  Chaffee also had 16 points.  Lehman was next with 10 points, seven steals, and six assists.
