Watkins girls lose to Tioga, Candor

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen girls soccer team lost to Tioga, 3-1, Oct. 8. Angela Keough had the only goal for Watkins Glen. Jenna Swarthout had an assist. Erika Hoad had six saves in goal.
In the game against Candor the day prior, the Watkins Glen girls lost to Candor. Coach Travis Durfee stated, “We put together some excellent soccer at times—intelligent runs, well-played balls. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.”
Chelsea Lehman scored Watkins Glen’s only goal at 8:06 in the second half with an assist to Jordan Kelly. Hoad had 14 saves in goal. Durfee added, “I’m proud of the girls tonight. They dug in their heels and persevered, facing a two-goal deficit. In the past we might have hung our heads and packed it in, but tonight we showed some fire. We wanted this one. And we came so close, but it slipped away.”
The Watkins Glen boys soccer team improved its overall record to 11-1-1, and its league record to 11-0-1 with a 5-0 win over Tioga, Oct. 9. Kody Gregory had two goals and an assist. Andrew Conklin, Will Simiele and Ian Anderson each had goals. Anderson, Chris Duane, Taylor Gates and Matt Hayes each added assists.
Earlier in the week, Oct. 7, the team beat Candor 6-0. Austin Stephany had three goals. Anderson had two goals and two assists. Duane had a goal and an assist. Gregory and Gates each had an assist. Conklin had two saves in goal. In the Oct. 5 game with Newark Valley, the Senecas won 3-1, Oct. 5. Stephany had two goals and an assist. Andrew Malaney had a goal. Conklin had three saves.

Football
The Watkins Glen football team lost to Newark Valley, 57-6, Oct. 10. Watkins Glen scored a touchdown in the final quarter on a one yard run by Kyle Cocola. The conversion failed. Hunter Arcangeli had 19 carries for 90 yards. Travis Waite had 13 carries for 60 yards. Cocola had six carries for 25 yards and one touchdown. Josh Paradiso had 26 yards on six carries. Billy Brennan had 21 yards on six carries.

Swimming
The Watkins Glen swim team beat Whitney Point, 53-44, Oct. 8. Haley Tuttle won the 200 freestyle in 2:13.97 and the 100 breast stroke in 1:19.65. Haleigh Wixson won the 50 freestyle in 25.94 and the 100 freestyle in 56.39. The 100 backstroke was won by Taylor Chaffee in 1:05.54. The team of Sarah Wickham, Ashley Chouinard, Marguerite Kellogg and Chaffee won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:35.33.
Earlier in the week, Oct. 6, the team lost to Lansing, 100-75. Wixson won the 200 individual medley in 2:25.05 and the 100 butterfly in 1:03.84. The team of Wickham, Lee Ann Gezzi, Sarah LaMascus and Kellogg won the 400 free style relay in 4:48.13.
The Watkins Glen girls swim team has a record of 8-2.

Volleyball
The Watkins Glen volleyball team lost to Newfield, 3-0, Oct. 8. The game scores were 18-25, 14-25 and 19-25. Kayli Westervelt had seven service points, three aces and three assists. Samantha Riley had five points, two aces, four kills and seven digs. Jessica Stansfield had two kills, three blocks and seven digs.
