Watkins Glen approves new budget for May vote

WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen school board has approved their proposed budget for the 2018-19 school year.
The proposed district budget comprises two propositions. The two combined will result in no increase compared to the 2017-2018 fiscal year. The propositions include:
Proposition 1: The proposed general budget is $27,047,750;
Proposition 2: Requests voters to approve the leasing of eight buses with a total cost not to exceed $172,450 per year for a maximum of five years.
Assuming current property assessed valuations, the average tax rate per $1,000 is estimated to decrease by 26 cents with a rate of $11.41 per $1,000. For a home assessed at $200,000, on average, the tax reduction would be $51.
A public hearing is scheduled for Monday, May 7 at 5:45 p.m. to review the budget, propositions and school programs.
District residents will then vote Tuesday, May 15, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., for the above propositions and also elect two school board members. The new school board members will serve three year terms.
