Watkins Glen graduate passes away

WATKINS GLEN—Devon Shaw, a 2013 Watkins Glen graduate, passed away Tuesday, July 9, after a four year battle with cancer.
Shaw was diagnosed during his freshman year of high school. The school and community rallied around him by raising funds through the “Defense for Devon” over the past four years. In 2012, Shaw was even the honorary guest at the Schuyler County Relay for Life.
During last month’s graduation, high school Principal Dave Warren spoke for Shaw’s mother. Warren said she was grateful for everything the school and community had done for her son.
Watkins Glen Superintendent Tom Phillips said the community was “graced by the presence of Devon.” He added despite the cancer, Shaw was tough, persevered, and continued to be determined.
The Watkins Glen Central School District will offer the Fieldhouse as a place for students to gather together. Phillips said the building will be open throughout the week during the workday. He added support staff will be available to students as well.
Phillips said, “I like to think the community and school walk a little taller for having known Devon.”
