Watkins Glen performs 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'

WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen Class of 2018 will present the musical, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," March 23-25, at the Watkins Glen high school auditorium.
"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" will run Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 25, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and students and $5 for children age 5-10. Tickets are available at the door.
Based on songs from the Disney film and the Victor Hugo novel, the show follows Esmeralda and her fellow gypsies as they fight against the prejudices of Archdeacon Frollo. Raised in seclusion by Frollo, Quasimodo longs to be among the people he watches from the towers of the Notre Dame cathedral, and eventually gains the courage to break out and save Esmeralda, who has shown him kindness. Soldier Phoebus and Queen of the Gypsies Clopin also help the people rise up against oppression. The show carries many timely themes.
In all, over 20 students from seventh to 12th grades have been rehearsing since January. Music in the production is by Alan Menken and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The book is by Peter Parnell. Memorable songs include "Someday," "God Help the Outcasts," "Out There" and "Heaven's Light."
H Nathaniel Rose plays Frollo, with Wyatt Brower as Quasimodo. Grace Wickham is Esmeralda, coupled with Conlin Wysocki as Captain Pheobus. Amanda Armstrong plays Clopin. Other featured actors include Alix Matthews as Jehan Frollo, Jack Muir as Lt. Frederic, Claudia Parker as Florika and Kelsey Kernan as Saint Aphrodisius. The statues and gargoyles who befriend the lonely Quasimodo are Maria Brubaker, Scott Brubaker, Douglas DiGregorio, Elliott Holland, Ashlyn Karius, Kathryn Losey and Nikole VanDyke. Rounding out the cast who each play multiple roles are Macy Fitzgerald, Hannah Jitomer-Rowland, Iris Elaina Rodriguez and Sarah Shaffner, Anya Simpson and Sarai Wynkoop.
Michelle and Tim Benjamin of Montour Falls are directing their 14th show for the Watkins Glen high school, with Sarah Matthews as Music Director. Costume Director is Tammy Cole, and choreographers include Michelle Benjamin, student Grace Wickham and alum Kelsey Johnson.
The pit band includes Tom Bloodgood, Pam Cicconi, Bernie Riley, Sam Riley and Simon Wigmore, along with Sarah Matthews.
Hair is by Shear Elegance. Producer is Sam Brubaker, and the show is presented by the Watkins Glen High School Class of 2018, in cooperation with Music Theatre International.
