Watkins Glen police study consolidation

WATKINS GLEN—A website will keep track of the Watkins Glen village’s review of possibly consolidating the police and sheriff’s department.
The site is http://www.cgr.org/watkinsglen/, linked off of the village’s webpage. It is designed to facilitate community engagement as Watkins Glen and Schuyler County consider options for providing consolidated police services. The study process began in January 2013 and is expected to take six months. The board includes Police Chief Tom Struble, Mayor Mark Swinnerton, as well as other village board and legislative members.
The village initiated a police department study to proactively assess the potential of restructuring the village of Watkins Glen Police Department, including the possibility of consolidating with the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department. The process will take approximately six months and will only evaluate the police service. The study will generate operational, governance, and fiscal impacts related to the police department that will provide detailed information for the community to make an informed decision about the future of the village police department.
The process is being overseen by a study committee of village and county officials, with assistance from the Center for Governmental Research (CGR), a nonprofit management consulting organization with expertise in government management, public finance and municipal consolidation processes. The committee and CGR encourage public engagement in this process by visiting the website.
