Watkins Glen school board 05/13/09
Meeting: 
The Watkins Glen school board met Tuesday, May 5 for one hour 15 minutes.
Attendance:  Robert Dill was the only board member absent.  There was one member of the public in the audience.
Action:  The school board approved an agreement with DeGroot Management Services Inc. for the 2009-10 school year to manage the district’s unemployment claims.
• The district will participate in the GST BOCES joint cafeteria supply bid for 2009-10.  
• The board accepted a donation of $200 from Heidi Pike and a matching donation from the Parent Teacher Association.  The money will be used to purchase middle school books and accelerated reader quizzes.
• The board also acknowledged the first reading for policies in the education policy manual, including equal opportunity, payroll procedures and the district’s compliance with copyright law.
Discussion without action:  High school Principal Dave Warren spoke about the changes to how staff handle failing students.  He gave a brief overview of how the high school teachers met to create a mission statement and will meet again to evaluate the changes after graduation.
• The board held a public hearing on the proposed 2009-10 budget,  In addition to the budget, voters will be elect two board members May 19.  The candidates are Joseph Palumbo and incumbents Robert Dill and Michael Myers.
Appointments/resignations:  The board approved Tammy Bradley as a food service helper.  Travis Durfee was appointed varsity girls soccer coach for the fall.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting is June 1 starting at approximately 6:30 p.m., following an executive session.  The next board workshop will be Monday, May 18 at 5:45 p.m.
