Watkins Glen school board 06/15/09

Meeting:  The Watkins Glen school board met Monday, June 15 for 45 minutes.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were no members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board accepted the Academic Intervention Plan Nan Woodworth-Shaw presented.  She explained how the principals and superintendent were all involved in its update.  She explained AIS is to help students improve their test scores.  Board member Brian O’Donnell asked if parents could opt their child out of it.  Woodworth-Shaw said only if the student is not in AIS for low grades on state tests.
• The new eighth grade science and seventh/eighth grades history text books were approved by the board.
• A health and welfare services agreement with Horseheads school district was approved.  Superintendent Tom Phillips said it is for students who go to non-public schools in the Horseheads district.
• The board approved an agreement with Schuyler County Mental Health Clinic for transportation.  Phillips explained the school helps bus patients.
Discussion without action:  The board reviewed more of the school policies.
Appointments/resignations:  The board approved the following appointments: Matthew Craig as pre-Kindergarten to 12 music coordinator, Scott Morse as five to eight social studies coordinator, and Barbara Coon as nine to 12 science coordinator.   Ben Connelly was appointed the seventh grade boys basketball coach.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting will be Monday, July 6 at 5:45 p.m.
