Watkins Glen school board 11/7/11

Meeting:  The Watkins Glen school board met Monday, Nov. 7, for 20 minutes.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were two members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board approved lead evaluator training certification so the district is in line with the state’s annual performance professional review (APPR) standards.  Superintendent Tom Phillips explained Principals Rod Weeden and Kristine Somerville need approval to evaluate the teachers, while he has to be approved to evaluate the principals and in case of a teacher review appeal.  He said this means they all have to go for training, which BOCES is offering.
    •  The board approved the usual election officials to handle the proposed district consolidation vote.  Clerk Sharon Clark added they will use two voting machines.
Discussion without action:  Phillips said New York Sen.Thomas O’Mara has sent a letter to the New York State Education Department saying he approves of Watkins Glen considering district consolidation as a way to save money.  Phillips added he and Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds Mike DeNardo have met with the state department about the proposal to close the middle school.  He said the district is still waiting for the state’s approval of the project before the public votes on it.
Upcoming meetings:  The Monday, Nov. 21, workshop meeting was canceled.  The next regular meeting will be Monday, Dec. 5, expected to start at 6:30 p.m.
