WATKINS GLEN—Road racing is popular in Watkins Glen, but Saturday’s big event was the annual Waterfront Festival and Cardboard Boat Regatta. A total of 83 contestants built cardboard boats and raced them in the Seneca Harbor marina, two at a time. The weekend event started on Friday with Harbor Nights, Harbor Lights, which included music, food, and a lights display. The regatta was Saturday. The course ran from boat launch to the seawall, west to the pier and then back to the seawall, approximately 200 to 225 yards.
The Watkins Glen Cardboard Regatta was conceived by Dean Kimball in February of 1994 as an addition to the Watkins Glen Waterfront Festival. Since its inception in 1994 the cardboard regatta has grown from a group of 12 boats to an armada of 75 or more each year.
