DRYDEN—The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team beat Lansing, Friday, Feb. 17, to win the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Large Schools title.
The final score was 45-28. Watkins was the large school south champion, while Lansing was the large school north winner.
"It was a lot closer than the score indicated," said Coach Chris Clark. Taylor Chaffee led with 15 points, followed by Angela Keough with 13. Chelsea Lehman scored nine points, while Haley Tuttle had four points. Victoria Goehner scored three points and Madison Gates added one.
"The story for us was free throws," said Clark. Watkins was 27-for-34 at the line.
Clark added that Watkins knew it would be "a war" against Lansing. He explained earlier in the week, "we set the mark at 30 points; the first to get 30 points would win the game." And that was just what Watkins did.
The Senecas will compete next in their first sectional game of the season, Wednesday, Feb. 22.
