Watkins loses to Whitney Point, 34-6
WHITNEY POINT—The Watkins Glen varsity football team lost to Whitney Point, 34-6, in an away game, Friday, Sept. 24.
Watkins’ only touchdown came from Derrick Steinruck, rushing six yards, in the fourth quarter. Steinruck also had a total of 18 carries, for 68 yards. Over all, the Senecas had 175 yards: 170 rushing and five passing.
"I am proud of all our kids, they refused to quit. It was a total team effort tonight. Our reserves stepped in for some injured players and did well,” said Coach Mike Johnston.
Other key players include Tony Simiele with five carries, for 52 yards. Travis Waite had 15 carries, for 32 yards. Billy Brennan contributed five carries, for 18 yards. Also on offense , quarterback Adam Huey was one for one, with five yards.
"We ran a 20-20 offense tonight. We effectively moved the ball from our 20 to their 20, but could not capitalize in their red zone when it mattered most,” Johnston added.
On defense, Josh Kelley and Brennan each had six tackles. Brandon Westervelt had six tackles and one fumble recovery.
"We battled hard today, but could not stop them on offense. We didn't have any answers for (Whitney Point’s Wyatt) Soeffing, he ran all over the field on us,” said Johnston.
The football team plays next against Newark Valley Friday, Oct. 1, for Homecoming.
