Watkins residents vote to close middle school

WATKINS GLEN—Residents of the Watkins Glen Central School District voted, 408-204, to allow the board of education to spend funds on a project that will close the middle school and create a single campus.
The consolidation project also includes state mandated improvements to the 12th Street building, which currently houses elementary and high school students.  Additional classrooms and facilities will be constructed at the main campus to house all students, kindergarten through 12th.
Superintendent Tom Phillips previously explained all work is expected to be completed by the start of the school year in 2014.  The district looked into closing the middle school as a way to save costs, stating that keeping that building open will cost Watkins Glen more than closing it.
"I'm pleased the community has clearly affirmed the direction the district is moving in," said Phillips about the vote.
