Watkins swimming finishes third, Odessa seventh

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen girls swimming and diving team finished third and Odessa-Montour finished seventh in the Class C Section IV Swimming and Diving finals, held at Watkins Glen, Saturday, Nov. 7.
The top two places were won by Lansing, 385 points, and Chenango Forks, 354 points. Watkins Glen ended the two hour Class C championship with 248 points. Odessa-Montour had 166.
Watkins Glen placed high in a number of events. Taylor Chaffee, Victoria Wixson, Haleigh Wixson and Haley Tuttle placed third in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Chaffee also placed first in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Haleigh Wixson placed first in the 100 Yard Butterfly and second in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Wixson and Chaffee placed first and second respectively in the 100 Yard Backstroke.
Wixson won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.10 and the 100 backstroke 1:01.86. Wixson previously qualified for States in both events plus the 100 freestyle. Wixson will have to choose which two events she will swim in at State competition which will be held Nov. 20 and 21 at Webster-Schroeder High School, Webster, N.Y.
Taylor Chaffee was the only other Watkins Glen swimmer to win an event at Sectionals. Chaffee won the 200 freestyle in 2:03.98.
Watkins coach Abby Tormey said she was pleased with how Saturday’s meet ended. She added the girls finished the season with a 10-3 record and second in IAC.
The Odessa-Montour girls placed fifth in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay with swimmers Victoria Burnham, Quinn Griswold, Stephanie Collins and Alyssa Bleiler. Griswold also placed fifth in the 100 Yard Backstroke. Bleiler placed sixth in both the 100 Yard Butterfly and 200 Yard IM.
O-M coach Jessica Conklin said the meet went really well and that several swimmers beat their best times, including Justine Chapman-Heichel in the 50 Yard Freestyle and Griswold in the 100 Yard Backstroke.
Conklin added the season ended well, especially compared to last year. She said this year the end record was 7-4-1, while last year the girls won only once.

Boys Soccer
The Watkins Glen boys soccer team’s season ended in Owego, N.Y., Nov. 4, when the boys lost to Owego, 4-0. The Senecas finish the season with a record of 14-3-1.
