WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour varsity volleyball teams competed in Watkins’ 2010 Varsity Tournament, Saturday, Sept. 25. Watkins Glen finished in second place, and Odessa took fourth. Eight teams competed, in two different pools. From those two sets of games, the top four teams advanced to the semifinals. Watkins entered the semifinals with no loses. The Senecas beat Newfield, 25-11, 25-16; Moravia, 25-14, 25-14; and Odessa, 25-13, 25-14. In the semifinals, Watkins beat Spencer-VanEtten first, but then lost to Thomas A. Edison in the championship game; 21-25, 25-14, 20-25. Coach Krysti Westervelt said the Watkins girls “played a tremendous day.” She pointed out the only time Watkins lost any sets was in the championship game. Watkins plays Edison again Tuesday, Sept. 28, and Westervelt said the team is ready to face them. To get to the semi-finals, Odessa won three sets and lost three. The results were 29-27, 16-25 against Moravia; 25-16, 25-15 against Newfield; and 13-25, 14-25 against Watkins. In the semi-finals, Odessa also lost to Edison. The Indians’ Taylor Carey was named to the all-tournament teams by the opposing teams’ coaches. “Overall the girls played very well and we got a chance to work on some different options for the second half of the season,” said Coach Russ Gardner.
