WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen wrestling team beat Odessa, 42-27, in the "Battle for the Belt."
The match was held Wednesday, Feb. 3. This was the third year the two schools competed for the belt. With Watkins' win, this is the Senecas' second year to take possession of the belt.
The event started with three forfeits, giving Watkins an early lead at 12-6. The Indians' Brooks Bellows took the first actual match for Odessa by default, with Dustin Cummings having a nosebleed. Next, Brandon Monteiro took Watkins' first win by pinning Matt Smith in 3:18. In the 135 weight class, Marco Manzo also scored for Watkins, pinning Jeremy Zoeke, in 39 seconds.
Wyatt Bowen scored Odessa's next win in the 140 weight class against Neil Planty. Bowen pinned Planty in 1:33. Luke Smith was Odessa's next win, against Adam Hughey, 5-3. In the 171 weight class, Broc Force pinned Odessa's Tom Starkweather in 1:59.
In the second to last match, Odessa had its last win. Brandon Shisler pinned Charles Mosley in 2:36. Watkins' Bryan Planty pinned Robert DePue in 59 seconds for the last match of the evening.
