Watkins wins in overtime

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team beat Corning East, 54-51, Monday, Feb. 8, during overtime.
Watkins had maintained a lead until the final quarter, when Corning caught up to the Senecas. The two teams tied at the end of the fourth quarter, 47-47.  Watkins had been behind by three points, but Travis Waite made a three-point shot with less than 30 seconds left on the clock.  Corning then had the ball until Watkins intercepted at the last second to keep the tie.
In overtime, the battle for the lead between the two teams was even in the four extra minutes.  Watkins and Corning became tied again at 51-51 in the last minute.  Stuart Cook succeeded in making one last three-point shot to bring Watkins into the lead with 1.6 seconds on the clock.  The end score was 54-51.
Cook and Connor Fitzsimmons were Watkins' highest scorers with 16 points each.  Cook had four total three-point shots.  Fitzsimmons had three.  Waite was next with 14 points, including four shots from beyond the three-point line.
The boys basketball team plays next at Odessa-Montour, Feb. 10.
