Watkins wins Melissa B. Wilson tournament

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team pulled out a championship win of their own in this week's second tournament, Wednesday, Dec. 30.
The Senecas beat Waverly, 51-40, in the Melissa B. Wilson Girls Basketball Tournament.  The game was close throughout the first three quarters.  At the end of each, Watkins was only in the lead by one point.  Waverly began with an active defense at the start of the game every time Watkins had the ball.  However, in the fourth quarter the Senecas finally gained a bigger lead in points over the Wolverines.
After the game, Taylor Chaffee was named the tournament's MVP.  Chaffee also scored the most points in Wednesday's game with 15.  Of that, she scored six three-point shots.  Jordan Myers was next with 13 points, including three from beyond the three-point line.  Marissa Pike had 12 points, including four three-point shots.
The girls basketball team also beat Newfield, 59-56, the previous day in the Melissa B. Wilson tournament.  Chaffee scored the most points in this game as well, with 28.  She also had 17 rebounds.  Myers had the next highest in this game as well with 14 points scored.
Coach Michelle Simiele said in the game against Newfield, Watkins had a great first half.  However, she said in the third quarter the Senecas "fell apart."  Simiele explained that in the fourth quarter though, the girls basketball team pulled themselves back together.
"It was a close one," she said.
