Weather helps capital improvements at The Glen

WATKINS GLEN—Unseasonably mild weather at Watkins Glen International has allowed capital improvement projects to continue at an unexpected pace.
E&D Specialty Grandstands returned to The Glen on Monday, Feb. 20, to begin the layout of the new grandstand that will replace the Red, White and Blues demolished in December. Silverline completed its portion of the RWB project prior to the New Year. In addition to laying out the new grandstand, E&D will evaluate the level of progress on the McDonald’s Family and 90 grandstands.
Existing power lines were relocated, permitting Genesee Construction to continue work on the storm retention pond. The ponds are located inside the entrance of Gate 2 behind where the old Red, White and Blue grandstands used to be.
Expansion of The Glen Club will resume in early March by Genesee Construction. Permanent rest rooms as well as a food preparation area for Americrown will enhance the fan experience at The Club that opened in advance of the 2011 season.
The track will continue to go through a few upgrades before the season begins Opening Weekend (April 21 and 22). WGI is in the process of constructing new tire packs in the Turn 1 run-off area while Genesee Construction will take care of expanding the paved run-off area. Sections of the iconic blue guardrail will be replaced to improve driver sight lines and widen run-off areas throughout the course.
The projects are an aspect of the $1.5 million of funding allocated to Watkins Glen International by International Speedway Corporation (ISC) Board of Directors to replace three grandstands and make additional facility improvements. E&D Specialty Stands, based in North Collins, N.Y., assisted The Glen last season, replacing the Green, Turn 10, and Turn 11 grandstands. Based in Burdett, Silverline was responsible for the demolition of the Red, White and Blues in December.
Overall, the project brings the Watkins Glen International investment since 2001 to just over $30 million. Once the three grandstands are complete, it also signifies, that with the exception of Pit Terrace, every grandstand at The Glen has been replaced since the beginning of the 2005 season.
