WGI partners with NextEra for solar project

WATKINS GLEN--Watkins Glen International and a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC., have announced plans for a 50-megawatt solar energy center to be built at Watkins Glen International, adjacent to the historic race circuit. NextEra Energy Resources is the world's largest generator of wind and solar energy. Upon completion, The Glen will house the largest solar field to be located at a racetrack in the United States.
The project will provide the region with an opportunity to diversify its energy resources with clean, renewable energy that is free of water, waste, and emissions. It will also help the state of New York achieve its renewable energy goals. WGI will provide the land to host the project, with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources owning and operating the solar facility.
"The Watkins Glen Solar Energy Center will be an incredible step in our facility's quest to become more environmentally-friendly," track President Michael Printup said. "We have taken part in several green programs over the years--including several NASCAR initiatives, a leading recycling plan and efforts to move toward a paperless media center. In addition to solar, NextEra Energy Resources has a variety of energy products across the country including wind, energy storage solutions, nuclear and natural gas. In the U.S. and Canada, NextEra's facilities have 20,950 megawatts of generating capacity.
