Yates changes emergency management

YATES COUNTY, May 25—During a special meeting of the Yates County Legislature Wednesday, May 18, a local law creating the Department of Emergency Management in Yates County was approved.
During the very brief meeting, the law was adopted without discussion. The office has been without a director since November 2010 when Glen Miller retired. That position was covered by Civil Service with an examination required. No exam is scheduled until 2012. Diane Caves is serving as deputy director. The lack of an exam has been an item of concern. Yates County asked that the requirement be waived; however, that has not been approved.
In other business: Chairman Taylor Fitch was authorized to sign a contract for Health and Human Services Voting access for individuals with disabilities polling place access improvement. The grant amount is $1,035.
   • Yates County Planning Board member Marilyn Scharf was recognized for 15 years service on the board. Scharf represented the town of Barrington. Scharf was thanked for her invaluable contribution to the board and for giving of her time and talents with such dedication.
The next regular meeting of the Yates County Legislature will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 13 in Legislative chambers in the Yates County office building.
