YATES COUNTY—A group of area residents and business owners have begun asking members of the Yates County legislature and public safety department about making comparisons and cuts for the 2014 budget. Resident Steve Marchionda, who said he is conducting a independent study of the Yates County budget during the February finance committee meeting, said he began comparing the public safety budget and arrest data from 1979 to 2011 using the Yates County budget and annual sheriff’s report to the legislature. Legislature votes to refill vacant positions
YATES COUNTY—The Yates County legislature voted to refill a vacant criminal investigator position and a deputy sheriff position during their regular meeting Monday, Feb. 11. The criminal investigator position will be filled through the promotion of a current deputy sheriff, whose then vacated position will be filled through hiring. Legislators Douglas Paddock, Mark Morris and Leslie Church voted against filling the criminal investigator position and Robert Schwarting, Rick Willson, Paddock, Morris and Church voted against filling the then vacant deputy sheriff position. Read More ...

Finance committee debates program cuts for 2014
YATES COUNTY—The Yates County finance committee debated the wording of a draft letter to all county funded programs requesting them to begin seeking additional cuts for the 2014 budget during their meeting Wednesday, Feb. 6. County Administrator Sarah Purdy said the intent of the letter is to put the word out early in the year so they are able to work collaboratively in time to start the budget process. She said she wanted the letter to alert program heads “of the potential for significant cuts for 2014 of 10 percent or more.” Read More ...

YATES COUNTY—The Yates County finance committee discussed what would be necessary to create a citizens advisory committee to analyze the county budget during their special meeting Wednesday, Jan. 30. During last month’s meeting, the legislature had indicated an interest in forming a committee, with only Donna Alexander in opposition of the idea. Prior to the adoption of the budget in December, there was also discussion of getting an outside group to look at the budget to find areas where the county is overspending during an exchange between resident Steve Marchionda and Chairman Taylor Fitch. Read More ...

YATES COUNTY—The Yates County public safety committee agreed to fill a criminal investigator and deputy sheriff position during their meeting Friday, Feb. 1. Undersheriff Jack Gleason said the investigator position was currently vacated, and a deputy sheriff would have to be hired once somebody from the department was promoted into the position. Gleason said the investigator does work for both the sheriff’s department as well as the Department of Social Services (DSS), devoting about half of his time to investigating fraud for the DSS. Read More ...
