Yates unemployment is 6.8 percent

    TRI-COUNTY AREA—Unemployment rates are dropping month to month across the area as the summer work season gets underway. However, the year to year comparison shows unemployment is up slightly at the same time.
    According to the New York State Department of Labor, the latest unemployment rate for Yates County, as of April 2012, is 6.8 percent. In March it was 7.6 percent, or a .8 percent drop. Looking at last year’s April number, 6.6 percent of Yates residents were unemployed. Yates is one of 23 counties in the state to have an unemployment rate less than 8 percent. The lowest is Tompkins, with 5.7 percent.
    Schuyler County is down to 8.4 percent, from 9 percent in March. As in Yates, the comparison to last year is close. The DOL said in April, 2011, 8.1 percent of Schuyler residents were unemployed.
    Steuben County’s unemployment rate is 9.3 percent for April. Last month, it was 10 percent. Last April, the unemployment rate was also 9.3 percent.
    Statewide, the April unemployment rate is 8.1 percent. This is down from 8.7 in March. However, the April, 2011, rate was 7.7 percent. The U.S. unemployment rate is currently at 7.7 percent.
