Yates fair plans fireworks, tractor pulls

PENN YAN—The annual Yates County Fair runs next week, from Tuesday, July 9, to Saturday, July 13, at the fairgrounds.
Daily events include 4-H displays, rides, food and entertainment. Admission is $10 and includes parking and rides. The fair starts Tuesday, July 9, with the opening night fireworks display at 10 p.m. The grandstands will be available for people to watch the show.
The schedule for Wednesday includes the Youth Challenge 2013, beginning at 3 p.m. Held in the entertainment barn, youth can compete in soccer, softball, a relay race and a special contest. All winners will receive ribbons from the Yates County Fair Association.
The first Milly’s Walk For Hunger runs from 6 to 8 p.m. The walk is to raise funds against hunger. A minimum donation of $20 is required to participate. People can walk inside the entertainment barn or along the midway.
Wednesday is also Cancer Awareness Day, beginning at 7 p.m. Each fair attendee will receive a Pink Cancer Bracelet when they enter the fairgrounds. At night, several winners will be able to ride in a hot air balloon.
The Red Neck Truck Pull, 2.6 Diesel, and Street Legal Trucks starts at 7 p.m. that same night. Pullers will compete for cash prizes.
On Thursday, activities include the Fire Truck Pull/Firefighter Relay Contest at 7 p.m. Area fire crews will pull a truck 100 feet in a timed event. There will also be a recruitment night to offer information about volunteering.
The Youth Challenge Contest will begin at 7 p.m. Youth will be challenged in ice cream eating, karaoke, and watermelon eating contests. The events will be held in the 4-H Building and all winners will receive ribbons.
At 7:30 p.m., the Town Pants, a band from Canada, will perform. People are asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
Friday is also Youth Fun Day and Annual Kids Day. The Fun Day begins at noon. Youth are invited to compete in a baby crawling contest, coloring contest, and the cold ice cream eating contest. The Kid’s Day drawing starts at 4 p.m. in front of the fair office. Last year more than 512 youth participated.
The Tractor Pull starts at 6 p.m. Visitors will watch from the grandstands as tractors compete in a 300 foot pull. Working Class Outlaws will perform at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, Paragon Jousting will challenge contestants’ strength. Jousting will be held from 2:30 p.m. to approximately 5:30 p.m. The Main Demolition Derby will be at 6 p.m. The Garden Tractor Pull follows at 7 p.m. The musical performance of the night will be Murphy’s Law Band, 8 p.m. The event closes the fair.
