Yates rejects Tops' sign idea

PENN YAN—Yates County Planning Board considered numerous referrals during their meeting on Thursday, June 23. The board denied a request from Tops in Penn Yan for a sign on a post.  Yates County Planner Shawna Bonshak said the area was not a good location for a sign. Tops requested additional signage area. This was also denied.
In other business: The board  approved a one year moratorium in Milo on drilling for natural gas in Marcellus Shale. The technique used to extract the gas, hydrofracking, has been a topic of concern for months. The moratorium is for one year.
    • Approved an area variance for a bakery/cafe in a Residential/Transitional district. The property, formerly a florist shop, is on Main Street in Penn Yan next to the Yates County Sheriff’s office.
    • Many variances were approved connected with front, side and rear yard setbacks. Several were from properties in the Town of Milo. The board will ask Milo to look at their setback and height regulations. The area with the largest number of requests for variances is in a part of the town that now has public sewers.
