Yates Transit Service underway

Penn Yan--Buses hit the roads Tuesday, Jan. 3 as Yates Transit Service (YTS) begins providing public transportation in Yates and surrounding counties. YTS received final approval from the Yates County legislature earlier in December, clearing the final hurdle to begin operation after the new year. The public transportation system will provide affordable transportation for Yates and surrounding counties.
The process to bring public transportation to Yates County, one of the last counties in the state that does not have a public transportation system for its residents, began in June when the Yates County legislature approved the plan to move forward. The Arc of Yates began working to leverage the community's existing infrastructure to provide public transit service to the community. Five routes will initially operate: Dundee, Dresden, Rushville, Naples and Geneva.
The public will be able to find route and schedule information throughout the community at locations such as the libraries, post offices and the county office building. Information on routes, schedules and fares is also available on the Yates Transit Service website, www.YatesTransitService.com. Community members can also call customer service at 315-694-7700.
The price of a one-way trip has been set at $1, and can be purchased either with cash at time of pick-up or with pre-purchased bus passes. Riders can catch the bus either at designated stops or by flagging down a bus at any point along the route.
Additional information is available at www.yatestransitservice.com.
