Student gets felony charges for threat
PENN YAN--A Penn Yan student was arrested Friday, April 20 for making a terroristic threat in a Snapchat post, a class D felony. Garret Wawrzyk, 17, posted a photo of himself dressed in all black with what appeared to be a gun. The caption said "Eric Harris v2." This post, made on the 19th anniversary of the incident, references one of the shooters responsible for the Columbine School massacre. The Penn Yan School Resource Officer Jeff Stewart was made aware of the post and worked with the Yates County Sheriff's Office and Penn Yan School officials to check Wawrzyk's welfare and ensure he was not an immediate threat to the school or anyone else. Penn Yan police and Yates County sheriff's deputies responded to Wawrzyk's residence that morning and brought him to the police department for further questioning. Wawrzyk was banned from the school, and officers determined the gun in the photo was an airsoft gun. Penn Yan police also took possession of a shotgun that was at the residence. Wawrzyk is currently being held at the Penn Yan police department awaiting arraignment.
