Accident leaves boy in guarded condition

PENN YAN—Penn Yan village police are investigating an accident, Sunday, May 8, that left a 9-year-old boy with third degree burns on 60 percent of his body.
According to authorities, as of Monday the youth, Michael A. Mashewske, was still in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.  Police said the accident happened on Grant Avenue around 7:35 p.m. on Sunday.  The police report stated the youth was attempting to re-light a fire in a fire pit with a gas can.
Authorities said the fire ignited the fuel in the can and it exploded.  He was transported to Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital by his family, before being airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital.
