Mustangs suffer first loss 50-20

PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity football team lost their first game this season after being defeated by the Batavia Blue Devils 50-20 Friday, Oct. 3. The Mustangs are now 4-1.
The Blue Devils scored through the air on their opening drive, leaving the Mustang offense to take over with 7:30 left in the first. Penn Yan's offense punted after being held to a three and out.
Dylan Stape brought an interception to the Batavia 30-yard line on the next defensive series. However, the offense failed to capitalize, turning the ball over on downs where they started.
The Blue Devils offense drove to midfield, punting on fourth and seven to the Penn Yan 30. The first quarter ended with Penn Yan still down 6-0.
Stape picked up 19 yards on a rush up the middle to midfield. Austin Fingar took a deep pass from quarterback Tanner Irwin to the endzone, but fumbled the ball, giving Batavia a touchback at their own 20.
The Blue Devils ran the ball down the field, but threw another interception to defensive back Sam Voak, giving Penn Yan the ball on their own four-yard line. After three plays netting one yard lost, the Mustangs were forced to punt out of their own endzone to the Penn Yan 29-yard line.
Two plays later Batavia completed a 27-yard touchdown pass, taking a 14-0 lead with 5:48 left in the first half.
Sean Emerson returned the next kickoff to the Batavia 49, and a facemask penalty started the offense at the Batavia 44.
Irwin put the first Penn Yan points on the board with a 15-yard touchdown rush, cutting the deficit to 14-6 with 3:27 left in the half.
Batavia's offense started on their own 41, capping another scoring drive with an eight-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown. The Mustangs were down 20-6 with 1:46 left in the second quarter.
A Irwin pass was intercepted after going through the hands of a receiver, giving Batavia the ball with 56 seconds left in the half on the Penn Yan 31-yard line. Two plays later Batavia scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass to take a 28-6 lead going into halftime.
The Mustangs received the opening kickoff in the second half, starting their drive at their own 36-yard line. With the aid of three Batavia penalties, the offense drove down the field scoring on a Stape rush to make the score 28-12.
The Blue Devils recovered their own fumble on the ensuing kickoff, scoring two plays later on a 70-yard touchdown pass to go up 36-12. Irwin responded on the next offensive drive, connecting with Fingar for a one-play, 45-yard touchdown pass.
Batavia's offense kept rolling though in the third quarter, scoring again on a long touchdown pass to increase their point total to 44. The final score was 50-20, Batavia.
