Seneca Indians get first win at Watkins homecoming

WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour combined varsity football team got a big homecoming win over Whitney Point Friday, Oct. 7 in a 66-26 contest. Before Friday's game, Cambria Weeden was crowned homecoming queen and Rong Lin king from a court that included Sara Morrissette, Amanda Pike, Angel Williams, Dakota Cole, Nicholas Crosby and Dominick Rolston.
Whitney Point scored first less than a minute into the game, taking an 8-0 lead. The Seneca Indians responded with a score of their own on a 22-yard run by Austin Dalrymple to cut the lead to 8-6. Whitney Point scored again 16 seconds later on a 61-yard run to go up 14-6, but the Seneca Indians put two more touchdowns on the board before the quarter ended. Dalrymple had a three-yard run for a score while Jacob Kelly added a one-yard touchdown rush. The Seneca Indians took a 22-14 lead into the second quarter. Dalrymple added his third touchdown of the half on an 11-yard run in the second quarter to give the Seneca Indians a 30-14 lead going into halftime.
Dalrymple scored the next two touchdowns in the second half, one on a six-yard rush in the third quarter and again on a 48-yard run in the fourth quarter to go up 42-14. Whitney Point added two more scores during the fourth quarter, but the Seneca Indians scored three more times as well. The scores came on a 42-yard rush, a six yard rush by Dalrymple and a 23-yard run by Joe Chedzoy to put the final score at 66-26. Dalrymple had six touchdown runs during the game.
The Seneca Indians offense put up 581 total yards, while the defense allowed 248. All of the team's positive yardage came on the ground. The Seneca Indians defense also earned two turnovers - one fumble recovery and one interception - while the offense did not have any turnovers.
Offensively, Dalrymple led in yardage with 278 yards on 29 carries. He was followed by Zack Elliott's 14 carries for 183 yards. Chedzoy added eight carries for 74 yards.
Defensively, Casey Falls led with 7.5 tackles, followed by Elliott with 4.5. Alexander Grady and Dayne Hughey each added four tackles, while Sean Kelly and Joe Glosenger each added three. Chedzoy had the game's lone interception.
"I am very proud of our players tonight," Head Coach Trevor Holland said. "We have kept our heads high through some tough times. We came out and played extremely well in a pivotal game for our season. We came together and were successful together. That is what teams do for one another."
The Seneca Indians move to 1-5 on the year going into a home game at Odessa-Montour against Owego Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
