State's 'Move Over' law expands
NEW YORK--New York State has expanded the 'Move Over" law for motorists to help protect workers on roads throughout the state. With the new January 2017 expansion, motorists must now slow down and move over a lane when they are approaching a vehicle assisting with a roadside emergency. The vehicle must be displaying blue or green lights and needs to be operated by volunteer firefighters or ambulance workers. Violators can be fined $275 and hit with three points on their driver's license. The "Move Over" law requires drivers to use care, slow down and safely move over when approaching law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, construction, maintenance vehicles and now volunteer firefighters or ambulance workers. Since the original "Move Over" law took effect in 2011, it has been expanded three times to include a wider range of vehicles, and has resulted in more than 79,000 tickets issued to motorists in violation of the law.
