Watkins Glen
Girls Soccer
The Watkins Glen girls soccer team repeated as the sectional champions in Class C during a game against Trumansburg, Friday, Oct. 27. The Lake Hawks won 1-0 with Ava Kelly scoring the goal. Goalie Lilly Ameigh made five saves during the game.
"It was a close game, but we managed to hang on against a very talented Trumansburg team," said Coach Scott Morse. "I thought it was a great performance by our team. We controlled much of the game but struggled to find the net. That happens sometimes, but our defense and goalkeeper played terrific and didn’t give up a goal. Ava Kelly made a phenomenal move to get to the net and score that first-half goal. Skye Honrath played really tough through some intense double teams and physical defense. She kept the pressure on and, though didn’t get one to go, was very strong in the attack."
Morse added, "Briana Hatch was really good in the midfield and Olivia VanSkiver doesn’t get enough credit for her play. Both of them played great tonight. Brenna Pierce was all over the field and made a huge impact on the game. Different teams call for different matchups, but every player on this team works hard every day and helps us win these games. I couldn’t be prouder of the girls. It’s so hard to win a sectional title, but to win in back-to-back seasons is really special. They set this as a team goal early in the year, and to watch them work so hard for it all season, and reach that goal was really great. Now we will have to get to work and prepare for the regionals next Saturday."
To reach the final game, Watkins Glen beat Southern Cayuga, 7-1, Wednesday, Oct. 25. Skye Honrath posted three goals, Sasha Honrath had two goals and one assist, while Ava Kelly added a goal and an assist. Michaela Wheaton had the final goal for the team and also an assist.
