FINGER LAKES--School districts throughout New York state will hold their annual budget vote, Tuesday, May 21. In addition to the budget, the vote also determines the school board and allows residents to decide on relevant local propositions.
At Dundee, the budget stands at $21,621,517 and voting will take place from noon to 8 p.m. in the public meeting room. There is also one seat on the board of education (incumbent Brittany Gibson, is running again) and propositions regarding transportation vehicles and the Dundee library. The budget represents an increase of 2.1 percent from last year.
In Penn Yan, the 2024-2025 is $41,993,946, an increase of 2.87 percent from last year. Also on the ballot will be the decision about purchasing four student transport vehicles. There are two, three-year terms to be filled and one, four-year term on the board of education. Candidates include Denise Hopkins, Thomas Barden and Alicen Pidlisny.
For Hammondsport, the budget stands at $16,181,960, an increase of 2.80 percent from last year. In addition to the budget, there is one open position on the board of education. The candidates are Kevin Bennett and Susan Alexander. The third proposition on the ballot is regarding the purchase of three 70-passenger diesel buses. Voting is in the high school gym.
In Watkins Glen, the budget stands at $30,189,050 for 2024-25. This is an increase of 2.59 percent compared to last year. The tax rate per thousand of assessed property value decreases from $10.59 per thousand to an estimated $8.72.
Also on the ballot will be proposition two which involves the leasing of four school buses. There are four people running for two school board positions. Joe Stansfield, Scott Yaw, Jonathan Van Ness and Barbara Schimizzi. Polls are open from noon to 8 p.m. in the board of education room.
For Odessa-Montour, the 2024-25 budget is $21,258,665. This is an increase of 6.4 percent compared to last year. The tax levy is going to remain flat and there is no tax increase.
There are also propositions for the purchase of two buses, funding of area libraries, and the establishment of three (facilities, transportation and maintenance) capital reserve funds.
Three seats are available on the school board including those of Robert Halpin, Dana Sgrecci and Kurt Anderson. Incumbents Halpin and Sgrecci are running again. Jason Dechow is running for the final seat.
Voting is from noon to 8 p.m. at H.A. Hanlon Elementary School, room 12.
