Boating accident leaves one dead

WATKINS GLEN—One person died and two people were injured in a boating accident on Seneca Lake that happened Saturday, July 23, at 10:20 p.m.
According to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office, the boat was traveling south on Seneca Lake when it struck a break wall causing the operator to be ejected from the boat. Investigator Maloney explained it was the concrete break wall near the Cargill plant that is closest to the canal.
The official report said Michael J. Tangye, 42, Boynton Beach, Fla., was ejected from the vessel and killed. According to authorities, Ashley M. Kay, 24, Orlando Park, Ill., and Joseph Hager, 25, Montour Falls, were taken to Schuyler Hospital and treated for facial injuries. They were later transferred to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. The report said both are listed in stable condition.
Authorities explained none of the three people were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident. Maloney said the department is waiting on a toxicology report to see if alcohol was involved, but couldn’t say for certain if it was a contributing factor. He added they don’t know what speed the boat was going or what caused the accident.
“We may never know,” he said.
The Watkins Glen police and fire departments, Schuyler Ambulance, Schuyler County Emergency Management Officer, Branchport-Keuka Park Fire Department, and the West Elmira Fire Department assisted at the scene.
The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
