Building project gets underway at The Windmill

YATES COUNTY--The Windmill Farm & Craft Market, located between Penn Yan and Dundee on Route 14A, will include an expansion and modernization when the market reopens for the 2023 season. Work is underway to erect a 5,000-square-foot facility that will house several independent "shops," each with private entrances.
The current layout of the market includes four main buildings at the front of the property with a north and south street of shops along the back side. While the four buildings are large enough to accommodate numerous vendors indoors, most of the street of shops locations relied on sheds in an open-air market style.
This new facility will replace approximately one-third of the "street of shop" buildings on the northwest corner of the property. The project will be ground-level, with a large new boardwalk in front, running from north to south. The Windmill last completed an expansion of this size and scale in 1998.
"The building is scheduled for heating and cooling, a Windmill first," said Steve Wilson, Windmill operations manager since 2016. "We are currently requesting bids from subcontractors, specifically electrical, drywallers, and HVAC."
Demolition, site prep and cement work have already been completed in preparation for construction.
The Windmill, which just completed its 35th year, is located on 40 acres, with approximately 26 acres in use. In 2022, the barn on the south street was enclosed and concrete floors were poured, reminiscent of a Kentucky horse barn, according to Wilson. In addition, two covered pavilions offer space for artists, performances, and special events.
The 2023 season will open on April 29 and will run through the last Saturday in November.
