Burdett builds new playground

BURDETT—The village of Burdett’s community Barnum Street Playground got a face lift with new equipment this past month.
Resident Betty DeLong explained the old slide and the roundabout were not up to code and the wooden swing set was rotting.  DeLong said she wanted to get the equipment replaced so she went around town seeking petitions for the village to replace the equipment.  She added all the residents she spoke to thought it was a good idea.  DeLong ended up with over 100 signatures.
“There’s quite a few children in town, all within walking distance,” she explained.
The village was also able to get a $14,000 matching grant, covering half of the costs.  DeLong said the equipment was purchased and arrived last year.  However, it was put in storage because it was winter.  Work started this year in the spring.
DeLong explained the pellets are the last thing to be done and should be completed by July 26.  The equipment includes two new slides with monkey bars, short climbing walls, and multiple platforms.  She added the old swings were kept, but were modified and repaired.
DeLong said she would like to also see a pavilion built at the playground.  She explained the only shade available is under an apple tree.  However, to do that DeLong said they need to raise more funds.  She also wants to see a fence put around the playground.
