County's shared services facility is complete

WATKINS GLEN—The new Shared Services Facility on Decatur Street allows Schuyler County and Watkins Glen village departments to work together, all under one roof.
The departments finally moved in the start of this year. Schuyler’s highway department, soil and water, weights and measures, watershed protection agency, and Watkins Glen’s code enforcement, public works, electric department, and street department are now all in the building. To commemorate the opening, an open house is scheduled for April 7, at 11 a.m.
County Administrator Tim O’Hearn said construction started last year.
The reaction to the move by the departments in question has been positive. Jerry Verrigni, soil and water district manager, said it is great being able to easily communicate with the highway department, just down the hall.
“It seems like our customers are happy to,” he added, so they do not have to go to eight different locations.
All of the departments are located in a hallway at the front of the building. County Highway Superintendent Greg Mathews said each office has its own, small conference space. There is also a larger conference/training room.
The back end is for vehicle parking and repairs. Each garage door is marked for the department it belongs to. Mathews explained the foremen’s offices are accessible through the garage. He added the departments are still moving over some equipment.
The former county highway department is now being used for cold storage. Mathews said several storage buildings out back will be demolished.
Mathews said having all these departments under one roof has streamlined operations. He said it could result in less equipment being purchased, because the departments will share with each other. He added they also have access to any equipment at the Watkins Glen central school bus garage across the road, and vice versa. O’Hearn said shared services would cut down on expenditures.
