Dundee makes more cuts to school budget

DUNDEE—Following a budget discussion at the March 25 meeting of the Dundee board of education, the proposed budget for the 2010-11 school year was pared to $13,699,824 from $14,3368,949.
The new figure reflects a .93 percent decrease in spending and a projected tax levy increase of 6.4 percent. The current budget is $13,308,958.  The board reviewed a list of eight budget revisions followed by a list of budget decisions for consideration.
The list had been presented during the March 11 meeting. Following are the  decisions from the March 25 meeting.
The first list included:
• Unfunded Tax Certiorari Reserve - this is the amount put aside for refunds of tax overpayments.
• Move the Literacy Coach, Social Worker and Elementary Congruence positions to grant funding.
• Reduce purchase of one bus.
• Cutting Professional Development.
• Cutting one librarian (retirement).
• Cutting one elementary teaching position.
• Cutting one Secondary Special Education teaching position.
The second list covered some cuts, some retentions and some items that will be considered at the April board of education meeting.
The second list included:
• Cutting a Literacy Coach - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act  (ARRA).
• Not filling three assistant coach positions.
• Cutting  one Operation and Maintenance position.
• Cutting one clerk position.
• Not filling Department Chair positions.
• Replacement of four teaching assistants with four teacher aides.
• Cutting the Dental Hygiene position.
There was extensive discussion of the dental hygiene position. Interim superintendent of schools Kathy Ring said Dundee is one of the few districts that still offer the service.
Not on the list of cuts were:
• Cutting  all JV/Varsity sports (Coaches, transportation).
• Cutting  school musical, play, drama.
• Cutting the late bus run.
• Not filling Schedule C positions which include Athletic Director, Class advisors, Band, Steel Drums, Masterminds, Ski Club, Yearbook, and morning supervisors.  
the next meeting of the Dundee Central School  District board of education will be at 7 p.m. on April 8 in the public meeting room.
