DUNDEE—The Dundee Rotary Club named Harry Carley a Paul Harris Fellow on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Carley was recognized with Rotary’s highest honor, the Paul Harris Fellow, for his outstanding volunteer service in the community and also his support of international service work sponsored through the Rotary foundation. Carley was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow medallion from the Rotary District Governor Jeff Krans (also a member of the Penn Yan Rotary Club). Krans said, “Harry Carley is exactly the kind of person the Paul Harris Fellow is meant to honor-a person who brings the words ‘service above self' to life.” Penn Yan Methodist Church Pastor Wayne Butler was one of the guests invited to the luncheon and said, “Harry Carley has been involved with social ministry work through our church for years. Harry is the voice for many people that don’t have a voice. Harry puts faith to work.” Dick Evans, a retired WFLR broadcaster and also a member of the RSVP Meals on Wheels program, said he was pleased to finally meet Harry Carley in person. Evans said he had become aware of Carley’s outstanding record of service with the Meals on Wheels program in the area-- but never had the opportunity to meet Harry in person until the Wednesday luncheon. Evans said Carley has volunteered an incredible number--1709 hours-- delivering meals to the elderly for the program. Bruce Van Dyne, Dundee’s Rotary Club Foundation Chairman, coordinated the Rotary luncheon and noted that Carley has also served as club president and said, “Harry is a quiet man who chooses carefully the projects that he can make a difference with and then he gets involved.” To help mark the occasion, the Rotary Club also invited Carley’s family members to attend the luncheon.
Carley moved to the Dundee area back in 1993 when he retired from the Corning Glass Works.
The Rotary Foundation will now also donate a $1000 check in Harry Carley’s name as a Paul Harris Fellow to help fund international foundation projects.
