Dundee village tackles financial issues

DUNDEE—Many of the items tackled during the March 10 meeting of the Dundee Village board were connected to money. One of the financial issues was village sidewalks. The village has a replacement program in which the property owner pays for materials and village crews do the work. Last year no one participated in the program. Streets superintendent Andy Howell spoke to the board about the problem, telling the group he had checked on costs and this year the cost would be $10.42 per foot. Concrete currently is $96 per yard for a minimum of six yards. Mayor Craig Prior added, “Concrete has about doubled in the last three years.” Trustee Judy Duquette said she thinks the village should budget for and begin doing some sidewalks with village money. Prior said if the village paid the entire amount they would have to pay the going rate, adding, “It’s cheaper for the homeowner to pay.” Howell said he wants to at least recoup the materials cost, commenting, “It’s too bad costs keep going up.” Interested property owners may contact the village office for more about this year’s program. There is concern about sidewalk replacement because many are in disrepair throughout the village.
In other business:
• Scheduled a public hearing on the upcoming budget at 6:30 p.m. April 14. A special meeting to adopt the final budget was scheduled at 7 p.m. April 21.
• Clarified rates for Hillside Cemetery. There are two rates, one for residents and another for nonresidents. Prior said the individual must live in the village to qualify as a resident. In related action, the board awarded the bid for cemetery maintenance to Yates ARC in the amount $19,284 for the year with an additional $2,750 for cleanup. Trustee Dana Gibson made the motion to accept ARC’s bid noting their lower price plus past service. One other bid was received.
• Accepted the bid of $218,286 from Pioneer Pump systems of Syracuse for covers and pumps for the wastewater treatment plant. The second bid received was somewhat lower, but did not exactly match what was in the specifications.
• Fire Chief Dan Peterson reported the problem with the new ambulance has been identified and will be remedied.
• Howell discussed the possibility of purchase of a used vacuum truck in cooperation with Watkins Glen. He said he had spoken to their representatives but money was a problem there as well as here. The price of the used machine that the village of Pittsford is selling is $50,000. Currently the village has to hire cleaning of the sewer lines. The last bill for this service was between $5,200 and $5,300 for a bit over two full days work.
• Gibson said the village has a request for three new Christmas decorations. Earlier this year Frontier donated $100 and the Yates County Chamber of Commerce $500 for decorations. Duquette said there is a balance of nearly $650 in the line item for the cost of electricity for street lights in this year’s budget. Duquette said prices for the decorations is slightly lower this time of year. Trustee Fred Cratsley asked Duquette to get two quotes for decorations before the village decides on them.
The next meeting of the Dundee Village Board will be at 7 p.m. April 14. That meeting will be preceded by a public hearing on next year’s budget at 6:30 p.m. both in the village hall on Union Street in Dundee.
