Employee dies in farm accident

TORREY--A 31-year-old man died after being involved in a farming accident Sunday, Nov. 9, at 1466 Quenan Road in the town of Torrey. The victim was identified as Marco Antonio Ortiz Perez, an undocumented worker from Guatemala.
The Yates County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene at 6:32 p.m. Sunday evening to what they describe as "an apparent farm accident" in their incident report. The report says Perez appeared to have entered a feed silo while it was in operation and was caught in the unloading mechanism.
Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike said they received a call from dairy farm owner Guy Christensen regarding a farm employee they discovered in the silo. Spike said Perez was shoveling corn inside the silo. His clothes were caught in a screw augur, pulling him in. He said the coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.
Members of the Dresden Fire Department responded to the scene along with mutual aid from the Penn Yan and Himrod Fire Departments to assist deputies and the coroner with the extraction.
