Examiner identifies body found April 2

TORREY—The Monroe County Medical Examiner has identified the body found by Yates County Sheriff’s deputies April 2, 2010, floating in Seneca Lake near Perry Point.
According to Sheriff Ron Spike, the body is of Alfonso J. Whitfield Jr., 26, Geneva, who has been missing since April 6, 2009.  Spike said Whitfield was last seen in Geneva fleeing the scene of an assault after stabbing his pregnant girlfriend.  The report said Whitfield was last seen in the Castle Street creek area, which had a swift undercurrent April 6, 2009, that leads to the lake.
He explained Geneva police obtained a warrant for Whitfield’s arrest for Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, and has been featured on the “America’s Most Wanted” television show.
The sheriff’s report also stated that a section of the body’s leg found in Geneva, April 1, was also identified as Whitfield.  Spike said the body found in Seneca Lake was badly decomposed and missing some limbs.
The sheriff’s report said the cause of death is still pending further examination and remains under investigation by the Geneva Police and the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.
