FedEx will open $12M facility in Horseheads

HORSEHEADS--FedEx will be opening up a new distribution center in Horseheads next year. This $12 million, 150,000 square-foot facility will be located at 124 Wygant Road and will replace the existing Horseheads location. Jill Koski, business retention specialist with Southern Tier Economic Growth, said the facility will be larger than their existing distribution center, adding it should allow for additional growth for FedEx.
Koski noted while FedEx would not list how many new jobs this expansion will create, she said the existing employees will be moved to the new site. She added the center will have 286 new parking spaces, 65 parking spaces for tractor trailers, 40 for delivery vans and 36 loading docks. While Koski did not know when they planned to start construction on the new facility, she said the site plan has been approved for the project. The estimated completion date is August, 2016.
Koski said the facility will be located within the HOST Terminal on a 15 acre site. She said the site was selected because it is near Interstate 86 and has good access to the highway. Koski noted the fact there is already an existing facility in the area indicates FedEx likes the location for its distribution center and wanted to put their larger facility nearby. She added the facility is likely to create "good, long-term jobs that historically pay well."
